PRESS RELEASE: FIRST WIND ANNOUNCES DONATION TO WASHINGTON HANCOCK COMMUNITY AGENCY THAW PROGRAM TO HELP WITH HOME HEATING COSTS
Financial contribution will support The Heating and Warmth (THAW) Fund to help residents meet rising home heating costs this winter
09/30/2008
Portland, ME—September 30, 2008—First Wind, an independent wind power company, today announced it will donate $7,500 to the Washington Hancock Community Agency (WHCA) THAW Fund. This donation is part of a statewide effort by First Wind, consisting of a total contribution of $30,000 across four regional funds, to help Maine residents with the escalating costs of heating their homes this winter.

A First Wind representative will present the check to WHCA officials on Wednesday, October 1st at 2:30pm at the Penquis office, located on 262 Harlow Street in Bangor.

“First Wind is committed to the development of new sources of clean, wind energy for the people of Maine, but we also recognize the challenges many families will face this winter as they cope with the rising home heating costs associated with traditional fuel sources,” said Matt Kearns, Vice President of Development for First Wind. “We are pleased to make this donation to WHCA’s THAW Fund, which is part of our larger effort to support existing programs across Maine that provide financial assistance to residents in need.”

The Washington Hancock Community Agency, a nonprofit 501(c)3 charitable organization, assists thousands of Downeast residents each year with essential services including transportation; housing rehabilitation and energy conservation; food, heat and utility assistance; as well as providing small business training and technical assistance. First Wind’s donation will be allocated toward Washington Hancock Community Agency’s THAW Fund, which provides assistance for emergency fuel delivery, electrical disconnect intervention or other heating related crises.

“WHCA appreciates First Wind’s recognition of the serious health crisis families in Downeast Maine will confront because of unaffordable heating fuel prices,” said Tim King, Executive Director of the Washington Hancock Community Agency. “Because of First Wind's generous donation, many Downeast families will be warmer this winter.”
